Design Week 2

We did so much in class this week!

Our first project was to design a radiating pattern on a circular cake. My inspiration comes from the top of a cactus (Thanks Lisa). A radiating pattern is a repeating design that moves out from once central point. I created a scalloped circle that has lines radiating from the center. I continued the lines to the sides of the cake to relate the sides to the top. I also drew lines of circles radiating from the center. The circles get larger as they radiate from the center.

Next, we created a square cake. The assignment

was to create a design with an anomaly, which is

something that is different than the rest. I found a

silhouette of a flower and traced it on the box. I

colored the flowers in with black sharpie. The

one white flower is the anomaly. I trickled the

flowers down to tie the sides of the cake.

On Tuesday, I drew a design on a piece of

rubber. I cut out the rubber to create the circle

design. The objective was to have a pattern the

come off the sides so it would connect when the

stamp was printed one after the other.

On Wednesday, the project was to create a stencil to

show the use of negative space. I found a Peter Pan

silhouette and traced it on stencil paper. I cut the

design out with an exacto knife. The tricky part is

cutting out the design in one piece. The top Peter

Pan is using the stencil with the Peter Pan cut

out. The bottom is using the already cut out Peter

Pan and straying ink around the edges. We used a

really cool tool that is hooked up to an air tank. The

marker is placed in the holder and air blows through

the maker and sprays the ink on the paper.

We also played with color on Wednesday. The

purpose of the assignment was to experiment

with color mixing. I created a row of colors only

using two colors. The first row of colors was

made by only mixing yellow and red. I only used

yellow and blue in the second row and only red

and blue in the third row.

  1. Copic markers are absolutely fabulous! Expensive, but the depth of pigment and the variability of how the medium responds is pretty original. I adore the cake with the off-center radiating pattern inspired by a cactus flower...I an absolutely see that in the design. Thanks for sharing the super fun art stuff-I'm jealous!

  2. Thanks! Those markers are pretty awesome. The art teacher saw the markers and the air gun at a conference not that long ago. We were the first class that experimented with them.
